This low growing prickly pear cactus features 4-6cm bright yellow flowers in late spring/early summer. All parts are edible. All parts contain thorns/glocids, so use gloves or tongs when handling.
In cold climates, the pads will dehydrate and lie on the ground over the winter (see third photo above.) They will rehydrate after the spring rains have stopped and resume growing (see 2nd photo above.)
To grow – place the cactus pad in a dry soil or sandy growing medium. Bury the cut side slightly into the soil. Leave it alone. Water only during prolonged droughts. Roots should form within a few weeks and the plant will begin growing again.
